MERCEDES GONZALEZ

Born in 1951 in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1973 she obtained the title of Primary teacher at
the Normal Institute. Between 1975 and 1984 she studied ceramics in the workshops of
José Collell and Nowinsky, and drawing and painting with Guillermo Fernández and
Clever Lara and in 1990 he opened her own first ceramic workshop.
In her career as a ceramist, two major facets stand out. As an artist giving classes in her
workshop where almost 700 students have passed, research, television programs,
courses, conferences and lately the success of her Youtube classes. As an artist, her
work in installations can be highlighted, some with more than two thousand ceramic
pieces, which when presented together and with special assemblies acquire a meaning
that transcends ceramics, participating in dozens of both collective and individual
exhibitions.
Awards:
First Prize in the Tapestry and Ceramics Hall of the Banco de la República (1990),
selected in the Municipal Biennial Hall of Plastic Arts of the ACU (1990), Research Award
of Competitive Funds and publication of "Rescue of ceramic memory in Uruguay “of
artists: Collell, Eva Díaz Torres, Cacheiro, López Lomba and Gurvich (2009) and “Los
caminos del Barro” on the work of Javier Alonso, Nowinski, Ospitaleche, Rosario
Romano, and Mercedes González (2012). Silver Morosoli Award for his career as a
ceramic artist (2010).
